The causes of ntdll.dll error messages can vary greatly. However, most of them result from a corrupt or damaged version of the ntdll DLL file itself, corrupt hardware drivers, or issues between Windows and other programs.
These errors can sometimes mean that a piece of hardware in your computer is malfunctioning, but this is rare.
Ntdll.dll error messages can apply to nearly any Windows-based software program, driver, or plugin on any of Microsoft’s operating systems from Windows NT up through Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
Ntdll.dll Errors
There are many different ways these errors might be displayed on your computer. They can be caused by a number of different things which result in many different error messages, but these are some of the most common:
- STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll
- STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll
- AppName: [PROGRAM NAME] ModName: ntdll.dll
- [PROGRAM NAME] caused a fault in module NTDLL.DLL at [ANY ADDRESS]
- Crash caused in ntdll.dll!
- NTDLL.DLL Error!
- Unhandled exception at [ANY ADDRESS] (NTDLL.DLL)
The message might appear before or after a program is used, while a program is running, when Windows is started or shut down, or even during a Windows installation.
How to Fix Ntdll.dll Errors
- Restart your computer. The ntdll.dll error you’re receiving could be due to a one-time, temporary issue and a simple reboot may resolve the problem completely.
Third-party software programs that have been installed on your computer are almost always the cause of ntdll.dll errors. The remainder of these troubleshooting steps resolves the issue only rarely.
As a workaround, assuming the ntdll.dll error really is Edge-related, install and use a competing browser like Firefox.
This is a troubleshooting step for this issue only. Be sure to set this path back to its original name if it doesn’t resolve the issue.
If a single program or plugin is causing the ntdll.dll error, reinstalling Windows and then reinstalling all of the same software may lead you right back to the same error.

ATTENTION! Before beginning the installation of the Ntdll.dll library, you must download the library. If you don’t know how to download the library or if you are having a problem while downloading, you can look at our download guide a few lines above.
Method 1: Copying the Ntdll.dll Library to the Windows System Directory
- The file you are going to download is a compressed file with the “.zip” extension. You cannot directly install the “.zip” file. First, you need to extract the dynamic link library from inside it. So, double-click the file with the “.zip” extension that you downloaded and open the file.
- You will see the library named “Ntdll.dll” in the window that opens up. This is the library we are going to install. Click the library once with the left mouse button. By doing this you will have chosen the library. Step 2:Choosing the Ntdll.dll library
- Click the “Extract To” symbol marked in the picture. To extract the dynamic link library, it will want you to choose the desired location. Choose the “Desktop” location and click “OK” to extract the library to the desktop. In order to do this, you need to use the Winrar program. If you do not have this program, you can find and download it through a quick search on the Internet. Step 3:Extracting the Ntdll.dll library to the desktop
- Copy the “Ntdll.dll” library file you extracted.
- Paste the dynamic link library you copied into the “C:\Windows\System32” directory. Step 5:Pasting the Ntdll.dll library into the Windows/System32 directory
- If you are using a 64 Bit operating system, copy the “Ntdll.dll” library and paste it into the “C:\Windows\sysWOW64” as well.
NOTE! On Windows operating systems with 64 Bit architecture, the dynamic link library must be in both the “sysWOW64” directory as well as the “System32” directory. In other words, you must copy the “Ntdll.dll” library into both directories.
NOTE! In this explanation, we ran the Command Line on Windows 10. If you are using one of the Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems, you can use the same methods to run the Command Line as an administrator. Even though the pictures are taken from Windows 10, the processes are similar.
- First, open the Start Menu and before clicking anywhere, type “cmd” but do not press Enter.
- When you see the “Command Line” option among the search results, hit the “CTRL” + “SHIFT” + “ENTER” keys on your keyboard.
- A window will pop up asking, “Do you want to run this process?“. Confirm it by clicking to “Yes” button.
%windir%\System32\regsvr32.exe /u Ntdll.dll
%windir%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe /u Ntdll.dll
%windir%\System32\regsvr32.exe /i Ntdll.dll
%windir%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe /i Ntdll.dll

- Copy the Ntdll.dll library into the directory we opened. Step 3:Copying the Ntdll.dll library into the installation directory of the program.
- The installation is complete. Run the program that is giving you the error. If the error is continuing, you may benefit from trying the 3rd Method as an alternative.
Method 3: Doing a Clean Install of the program That Is Giving the Ntdll.dll Error
- Open the Run tool by pushing the “Windows” + “R” keys found on your keyboard. Type the command below into the “Open” field of the Run window that opens up and press Enter. This command will open the “Programs and Features” tool.
