That said, to download the videos of your interest from YouTube, the first step you need to take is to download the YouTube app on your smartphone or tablet, in case you haven’t already done so. To do this on Android, press the Install button; to do it on iOS / iPadOS, instead press the Get button, then the Install button and authorize the download using Face ID, Touch ID or Apple ID password. Once the download is complete, start the app by pressing the Open button that appears on the screen or by touching the app icon that has been added to the home screen.

It offers the possibility to choose between various formats and various output resolutions, supports subtitles and is also able to download entire playlists (for up to 25 videos at a time, otherwise you have to unlock this feature by switching to the Premium version of the software, at a cost € 14.64, which also allows you to remove advertising and use additional extra functions).

To download the program to your computer, connect to its website and click the Download 4K Video Downloader button. Once the download is complete, if you are using Windows, open the .msi file obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, click first on the Run button and then on the Next button. Then place the check mark next to the entry relating to the acceptance of the terms of the service and complete the setup by pressing the Next button (twice in a row) and then the Install, Yes and Finish buttons. Next, launch the program, selecting its shortcut that was just added to the Start menu.

If you want, you can also download only the audio track of the movie, selecting the Extract audio option from the drop-down menu located at the top left and choosing one of the file formats available in the menu located at the top right.

VLC (Windows/macOS/Linux)

VLC is a popular free multimedia player available for Windows, macOS and Linux that is able to play practically any type of audio and video file without the aid of external codecs. In addition to fulfilling its main purpose, the program can also be used to download videos from the Internet and, therefore, also from YouTube.

To understand how to download videos from YouTube with VLC, first download the program to your computer by visiting its website and clicking the Download VLC button. When the download is complete, if you are using Windows, open the .exe file obtained and, in the window that is shown on the desktop, click on the Yes and OK buttons. Then, click on the Next (three times in a row) and Install buttons, then click on the Finish button to complete the setup.

If you are using macOS, instead open the .dmg package obtained and drag the VLC icon into the Mac Applications folder. Then, right-click on it, select the Open item from the context menu and press the Open button in the window that appears on the screen , in order to start the software going to circumvent the limitations imposed by Apple on applications from non-certified developers (an operation that must be performed only at the first start).

Now that you see the main program window on the screen, click on the Media menu> Open Network Stream (on Windows) or File> Open Network (on macOS), top left, paste the video URL in the field present in the additional window that opens and click on the Play button (on Windows) or the Open button (on macOS).

Once the movie has started playing, click on the Tools menu> Media information (on Windows) or on the Window> Media information (on macOS) menu, copy the string present in the Position field in the new window that appears and paste it in the address bar of the browser that you usually use on your computer to surf the Net (eg Chrome), then press the Enter key on the PC keyboard.

Now that in the browser window you see the YouTube video you want to download, right-click on it with the mouse and select the item to proceed with the download of the media file from the context menu that appears. What you will eventually get is a movie in MPEG-4 format.

As I told you at the beginning of the article, using the YouTube app and subscribing to YouTube Premium you can download the videos of your interest to your device, so that you can then play them offline.

TubeMate

Another tool to download YouTube videos on Android that you can consider using is TubeMate. This is a free and very easy to use app. Unfortunately it is not available on the Play Store, therefore, in order to download it, you need to download the related APK file from the developer’s website and proceed with the “manual” installation of the same, after activating support for unknown sources in the device.

If you do not know how to enable support for unknown sources on Android, proceed in this way: if you have a device with Android 8.0 or higher, instead, you must go to Settings> Apps and notifications, tap on the item relating to the browser from which you intend to download the APK package (eg. Chrome), press on the wording Install unknown apps and turn ON the lever corresponding to the item Allow from this source.

If you are using an older version of Android, tap on the Settings icon (the one with the gear) that you find in the Android drawer, tap on the word Security or that Screen. lock and security on the next screen and move the lever that you find in correspondence with the item Unknown sources or Unknown sources to ON. If necessary, confirm the execution of the operation by pressing the OK item in response to the warning you see appear on the display.

Now, go to the TubeMate website directly from your device and tap first on the AndroidFreeware button, then on the Download button that you find by scrolling the page and then on the Install APK button. If you are asked which app you intend to download the application with, choose the browser you are currently using and tap on the OK or Download items, in response to the warnings you see appear at the bottom of the display.

When the download is complete, expand the Android notification menu and tap on the name of the .apk file you just obtained, in order to start installing the app. In the screen that opens, touch the Install and Open items to complete the installation process and start TubeMate.

Now that you see the TubeMate screen, accept the conditions of use of the app by touching the wording I agree, grant the app the necessary permissions to be able to work and close the release notes screen. Next, choose whether you want to use the app by displaying targeted advertisements or not.

At this point, search for the YouTube video to download on your device, by tapping the button with the magnifying glass located at the top right and typing the title in the appropriate field, start playback and select the button with the arrow towards the bottom that appears at the bottom right. Therefore, indicate the format and resolution of the movie to be downloaded, using the appropriate menu, and tap again on the button with the down arrow located on the right, in order to start the download.

Keep in mind that, at the first download, you may be asked to download MP3 Video Converter: a free app required for TubeMate to work properly. In this case, press the Install button, choose to open the link with the Play Store and press the Install button to complete the installation procedure.

To follow the progress of the downloads, instead, call up the main menu of the app, swipe from right to left on the screen, and touch the icon with the down arrow located at the top. Once the download is complete, the videos will be automatically stored in the Videos section of your device’s Gallery.
