Writing activity
Samad Behrangi was born in the city of Tabriz in 1939 in humble circumstances. At the age of 16 he began training as a teacher and only two years later he began teaching in village schools. In parallel to his work, he studied English at the University of Tabriz .
In his professional life, Behrangi was critical of the Iranian school system at the time. He found that it was poorly adapted to the needs of the Iranian population, especially the rural population, because its content and administration were too closely related to the Western educational systems. He also found that it was not right to teach Persian to children with Turkish mother tongue. He deals with these questions in his work, Studies on Education Problems in Iran , published in 1960. Behrəngi advocated that educational institutions should be given more freedom and autonomy in order to adapt to the needs of their target group.
In addition to his educational duties, Behrəngi was interested in the folk traditions of Azerbaijan. He collected fairy tales and oral traditions from Azerbaijan and published them together with his friend Behrooz Dehqani under the title Fairy Tales of Azerbaijan in 1965, a second volume was published in 1968.
Behrəngi moved in politically left groups, his friend Dehqani was one of the founders of the daily cell of the Ahmadzadeh-Puyan group . In the late 1960s and 1970s, Behrəngi wrote several short stories for which he gained widespread recognition. His most famous work is called The Little Black Fish ; it is a story from 1968 that can also be read as a political allusion and that strongly attacks the Shah’s regime. In September 1968, Behrəngi had an accident near the Soviet border while trying to collect folk tales there. He was found drowned in the Aras River . His death has never been clarified and is often attributed to the assistance of the SAVAK secret police .
