What is H.264 video files and how to restore it? Find out that today

There are many other factors to H.264, but this is a beginners’ guide — so there are only a few settings that need to be heavily stressed

What is h.264 video? How can I use eZs3 to deliver my high quality videos?

An easy way to think about the way frames work is to imagine a cartoon animation. Back when animation was hand drawn, the easiest way for animators to efficiently produce an entire feature was to only animate foreground figures, leaving static background elements alone

H.264 similarly tries to isolate elements that don’t need to be saved repeatedly, throughout every frame of the entire video, in order to reduce file size

How do I get a good quality video with a low file size?

There is not a clear cut setting for every video in order to gain the optimal visual versus size equation

You will have to take a quick look through the video and note the amount of actions happening on screen at the same time

If there are numerous scene changes and actions on screen, you will need to raise the bitrate and number of I-frames to avoid compression artifacts (an image breaking into little squares due to over-compression)

If there is just a static talking head shot, then you can lower the bitrate to save bandwidth

The amount at, which you lower or raise the settings is subjective to each video and your specific needs

This guide will not give you an exact setting for your video, instead it will give you an overview of the settings that you can tweak to your specific purpose and explain how you can achieve better quality for the bandwidth level you are targeting

What are H.264 profiles?

H.264 runs multiple different profiles

Flash only supports the Baseline, Main, High, and High 10 profiles

H.264 can produce a maximum resolution of 4096 × 2048 pixels and a data rate of 720 mbps – way more than you will ever need; for comparison, Blu-Ray videos are encoded in 1920×1080 pixels at 40 mbps using the High profile

Which profile should you choose?

The main difference between profile types is quality

As the quality of the file increases, so does the level of the compression, making it more difficult to decompress

For simplicity’s sake, the two profiles you should focus on are the Baseline and High profiles

The Baseline profile is designed primarily for low level CPU devices, such as mobile phones. Devices may vary in what settings they can handle, but generally speaking you can count on the Baseline to at least be playable by the target device

The High profile on the other hand is targeted towards Windows, Mac, or Linux computers made after 2003. Since it is highly unlikely that your viewers will be using computers made in the previous decade, it is best to use the High profile if you are planning to use Flash

What other settings should I use?

There are many other factors to H.264, but this is a beginners’ guide — so there are only a few settings that need to be heavily stressed

Firstly, you should always select multiple pass encoding. Unless you are under a time constraint there is no reason to not have at least 2-pass encoding – it will increase the quality of your output file at the cost of a longer encoding time

Secondly, make sure when using the High Profile that CABAC is enabled. It will reduce bitrate at a negligible increase to decompression difficulty

IDR-frames control the seeking property of your video (i.e. how often an I-frame is used to fully reference all the frame data) A general rule is the keep the minimum interval between IDR-frames the same as your frame rate and your maximum interval between IDR-frames ten times your frame rate

– E.g.: if your frame rate is 29.97 fps, keep your minimum interval around 30 fps and your maximum around 300 fps

Finally, maintain frame rate and aspect ratio. If you are going to lower the resolution of your file, try to maintain aspect ratio – keeping the resolution at a multiple of 16 or 8, whilst also keeping in mind your flash player’s size

How do I check my bitrate?

Bitrate = file size in megabytes ÷ the length of the video in minutes)

Bitrate is the one setting you will need to figure out on your own. You can find a calculator here:

It will give you a rough approximation of the bitrate, but it does not take into account the length of your video. You may need to lower your resolution if you find that the recommended bitrate is too high for your target audience’s connection speed

eZs3 recommend between 2 megabytes per minute and 4 megabytes per minute, to meet most users connection speed

I’ve done all this and my video still takes ages to download… why does it have to all download before it will play?

The MP4 format sometimes has the metadata (play, pause, stop controls) at the end of the file — so the whole thing has to download before the video will play

You can move the metadata to the start of the file so that it will play straight awaye using this program:

Most likely, you also use H.264 video files, as this is perhaps the most common video format. So what is its uniqueness?

It’s all about having the highest image quality with small file size. In addition, it can be used by most video players (for example, Windows Media Player). And it is compatible not only with high-resolution devices but also with many other platforms (PSP, iPod, iPhone, Android, iPad, etc.).

What could happen to lead to H.264 video loss

H.264 video files may disappear from your computer, phone, etc. This can happen as a result of many things:

  • formatting the drive (forced or accidental)
  • deleting files and emptying trash
  • damage to the hard disk, file system, or registry
  • system failure
  • virus attack
  • damage to drive where h264 video files were stored

How to increase chances for recovery

You can recover deleted H.264 files. But, this can be done before the disk is overwritten with new information. So, to avoid this, you need to start video recovery as soon as possible and quickly. Also, stop using the device on which the H.264 video file or other video files were lost.

This is fundamentally important!

You can retrieve the file from any information source (hard drive, flash drives, SD cards, etc.).

Your lost video file can be of any size; its recovery is possible with this application. There are convenient free options, including preview (with one click of the right mouse button), full and fast recovery, etc. You can familiarize yourself with the application in more detail by downloading by “try it free” button. The wizard guides you and helps you recover files without hesitation.

Guide:

After installing the application, the Recovery Wizard will welcome you.

It will prompt you to choose the following

Frequently Asked Questions

The best to recover files from your iPod device is to use an iOS data recovery software on your MacBook or laptop.

Open the trash folder, click on the video name and select “Restore” or “Recover” from the menu bar.

iPads don’t have recycle bins or trash folders; hence, the only way to recover files from them is to connect them to a computer and use iTunes.

Connect the iPhone to a computer (where you installed iTunes) and run the recovery function to get back your videos.

The most effective way to restore an iPod video is to use iTunes. However, DiskInternals Video Recovery can recover H.263 iPod videos.
