If you plan to install Windows 11 on your device, you’re likely to need a bootable USB drive, and here are two ways to create one.

Although you can install Windows 11 in multiple ways, if you plan to start from scratch, you would usually use a bootable USB flash drive to proceed with the setup. However, since you cannot officially purchase physical installation media, you need to create one yourself.

On Windows 11, you have at least two tools to download the installation files onto a USB flash drive and make it bootable. You can use the official Media Creation Tool to download the files onto a removable storage. Or you can use Rufus, a third-party tool that makes it easy to create a flash drive to install the OS on a compatible or incompatible devices.

In this Windows 11 guide, we will walk you through the steps of creating a USB flash drive with support for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool and Rufus.

How to create bootable USB of Windows 11 with Media Creation Tool

The Media Creation Tool is the easiest method to create a bootable media to upgrade or clean install Windows 11.

To create an installation media with the Media Creation Tool, connect a USB flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and use these steps:

1. Open Windows 11 download page.
2. Under the “Create Windows 11 Installation Media” section, click the Download now button to save the file on the device.

2. Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
3. (Optional) Clear the Use the recommended options for this PC option.

1. Select the correct language and edition of Windows 11.
2. Click the Next button.
3. Select the USB flash drive option.

Once you complete the steps, the tool will download the necessary files to create a bootable media, which you can then use to start a computer to install Windows 11.

How to create bootable USB of Windows 11 with Rufus

Alternatively, you can also use Rufus, a free non-Microsoft tool that allows you to create an installation media to install Windows 11 on any supported hardware and software configuration. The utility provides two methods to create the installation media, including using an existing ISO file or directly downloading the file from the Microsoft servers.

Create install USB with Windows 11 ISO

To create a USB media with an existing Windows 11 ISO file, connect a flash drive of at least 8GB of space, and use these steps:

1. Open Rufus download page.
2. Under the “Download” section, click the link to save the latest release on your device.

1. Double-click the Rufus-x.xx.exe file to launch the tool.
2. Under the “Device” section, select the USB flash drive.
3. Under the “Boot selection” section, click the Select button on the right side.
4. Select the Windows 11 ISO file from the folder location.
5. Click the Open button.
6. Use the “Image option” drop-down menu and select the Standard Windows installation (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, 8GB+ RAM) option.

1. (Optional) Select the Extended Windows installation (no TPM 2.0/no Secure Boot, 8GB+ RAM) option to create a USB flash drive for unsupported devices.
2. Use the “Partition scheme” drop-down menu and select the GPT option.
3. Use the “Target system” drop-down menu and select the UEFI (non CSM) option.
4. Under the “Show Advanced drive properties” section, do not change the default settings (unless you know what you are doing).
5. Under the “Volume label” field, confirm a name for the bootable media — for example, “win11_usb.”
6. In the “File system” and “Cluster size” options do not change the default settings.
7. Click the Show advanced format options button.
8. Check the Quick format option.
9. Check the Create extended label and icon files option.
10. Click the Start button.
11. Click the OK button to confirm.
12. Click the Close button.

After you complete the steps, Rufus will create a USB flash drive to install Windows 11 on a compatible computer, unless you selected the option to create a bootable that skips the system requirements (not recommended).

To use Rufus to create a Windows 11 USB installer, connect a USB drive with enough space, and then use these steps:

1. Open Rufus download page.
2. Under the “Download” section, click the link to save the latest release on your device.

2. Click the Settings button (third button from the left) at the bottom of the page.

After you complete the steps, the free utility will download the ISO file and create the bootable media to install Windows 11 that meet the minimum requirements. If you selected the “Extended” option, the setup will bypass the requirements, and it’ll let you continue with the installation (not recommended).

If you have a Windows 11 bootable USB drive on-hand, you can use it to clean install your OS, or perform an upgrade. The bootable USB also helps you troubleshoot your PC and clean install Windows on multiple PCs while you’re offline.

Microsoft makes it easy to create an installation media with its Media Creation Tool. In addition, you can also use Rufus and the Command Prompt to create one. This guide shows you the three different ways to create a USB flash drive installer for Windows 11.

Before We Start: How to Download the Windows 11 ISO Image

To successfully create a Windows 11 USB bootable drive, you will need a Windows 11 ISO file also known as an ISO image. As such, it’s a good idea to get this sorted before moving on to the three ways to create a Windows 11 USB stick.

1. Visit Microsoft’s official page to download Windows 11.
2. Scroll down to the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) section.
3. Click the drop-down menu and select Windows 11.
4. Then, click on the Download button to continue.
5. The current page will load additional information and show the Select the product language section. Click the drop-down for Choose one and select your preferred language. Then, click Confirm to continue.
6. When the download section loads, click the 64-bit Download button.
7. Your download will begin immediately. However, it may take some time to finish downloading, depending on your Internet speed.

Once you have the ISO file downloaded, follow one of the methods below to create a Windows 11 bootable USB drive.

1. How to Create a Windows 11 Bootable USB With Rufus

Rufus is an open-source utility to format and create a bootable USB flash drive for the Windows operating system. Follow these steps to create a Windows 11 USB drive using Rufus. Once done, Rufus will show a success message. After that, you can use the Windows 11 bootable drive to install the OS on a compatible system.

1. Visit the Rufus website and scroll down to the Download section.
2. Click on the Rufus link to download the latest version.
3. Run the executable file and click Yes if prompted by UAC.
4. Connect your USB flash drive to your PC and wait for Rufus to detect and show it under the Device section.
5. Click the drop-down for Boot selection and select Disk or ISO image.
6. Then, click the SELECT button.
7. Select the Windows ISO file and click Open.
8. Click the drop-down under the Image option and select Standard Windows 11 Installation (TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot).
9. Alternatively, select Extended Windows 11 Installation (no TPM / no Secure Boot) to create a bootable drive for an unsupported system. This will skip the system requirement during install.
10. Leave the Partition scheme (GPT) and Target system (UEFI) as default.
11. Under Volume label, enter a name for your USB flash drive.
12. Leave the File system and Cluster size, and other options as default.
13. Make sure the Quick format and Create extended label and icon files option is checked.
14. Click the Start button to initiate the bootable drive creating process.

2. How to Create a Windows 11 Bootable USB Drive With Media Creation Tool

Media Creation Tool is Microsoft’s in-house solution to create an installation media. Follow these steps to create a bootable USB drive or DVD using the Media Creation Tool:

1. Connect your USB flash drive of at least 8GB to your PC. Make sure it is detected, and you have taken a backup of all the files on your USB drive.
2. Next, visit the Microsoft download center page.
3. Under the Create Windows 11 Installation Media section, click the Download Now button and save the file to your PC.
4. Next, run the MediacreationtoolW11.exe file and click Yes if prompted by UAC. The tool may take a few seconds to launch, so wait till you see the Setup wizard.
5. Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.

Media Creation Tool will now download the necessary Windows 11 files and create an installation media. This may take a while, so feel free to grab a coffee in the meantime.

When the “your USB flash drive is ready” message appears, click the Finish button to close the setup wizard. Now you can boot from the USB drive to troubleshoot or clean install Windows 11.

3. How to Create a Bootable Drive Using Command Prompt

If you don’t want to use a third-party tool to create a bootable drive, you can use the Diskpart utility and Command Prompt to create installation media. Here’s how to do it.

1. First, take a backup of all the files on your USB drive and then connect it to your PC.
2. Press the Win key, type cmd, and click on Run as Administrator under Command Prompt. You can also use PowerShell if you prefer it over Command Prompt.
