How to enable device encryption on Windows 10 Home

Are you running Windows 10 Home on your laptop or desktop computer? Then this is how you can protect your files using encryption.

Windows 10 Home doesn’t include BitLocker, but you can still protect your files using “device encryption.”

Similar to BitLocker, device encryption is a feature designed to protect your data from unauthorized access in the unexpected case that your laptop is lost or stolen. When the feature is enabled, the entire system drive and secondary drives connected to your device, are scrambled, and only you with the correct password can access the data.

The biggest difference between the two is that device encryption is available on all the editions of Windows 10, while BitLocker is only available for Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, and offers some additional management tools.

In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to enable (and disable) device encryption on your computer running the Home edition of the OS.

How to encrypt entire drive on Windows 10 Home

Although Windows 10 Home doesn’t come with BitLocker, you can use the “device encryption” option, but only if your device meets the hardware requirements.

Device encryption requirements

These are the hardware requirements for device encryption on Windows 10:

  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2 with support for Modern Standby.
  • TPM must be enabled.
  • Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware style.

Checking device encryption support

To see if your laptop or desktop computer meets the requirements for device encryption, use these steps.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for System Information, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Click the System Summary branch from the left pane.
  4. Check the “Device Encryption Support” item, and if it reads Meets prerequisites, then your computer includes support file encryption.

After you complete the steps, you can proceed to enable encryption on the entire system.

Enabling device encryption

To enable device encryption on your Windows 10 Home laptop or desktop computer, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Device encryption.Quick tip: If the “Device encryption” page isn’t available, then it’s likely that your device doesn’t support the encryption feature.
  4. Under the “Device encryption” section, click the Turn on button.

Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will turn on encryption for the current and future files you store on your computer.

Configure TPM on UEFI

If you know that your device has a TPM chip, but it’s disabled, you can refer to these steps to enable it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & Security.
  3. Click on Recovery.
  4. Under the “Advanced startup” section, click the Restart now button.

Turn on device encryption

Encryption helps protect the data on your device so it can only be accessed by people who have authorization. If device encryption isn’t available on your device, you might be able to turn on standard BitLocker encryption instead.

Turn on device encryption

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back in to switch accounts). For more info, see Create a local or administrator account in Windows.
  2. Select Start >Settings >Privacy & security >Device encryption. If Device encryption doesn’t appear, it isn’t available. You may be able to use standard BitLocker encryption instead. Open Device encryption in Settings.
  3. If Device encryption is turned off, turn it On.

Turn on standard BitLocker encryption

  1. Sign in to your Windows device with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back in to switch accounts). For more info, see Create a local or administrator account in Windows.
  2. In the search box on the taskbar, type Manage BitLocker and then select it from the list of results. Or, select Start >Settings >Privacy & security >Device encryption >BitLocker drive encryption.

Turn on standard BitLocker encryption

  2. In the search box on the taskbar, type Manage BitLocker and then select it from the list of results. Or, select the Start button, and then under Windows System, select Control Panel. In Control Panel, select System and Security, and then under BitLocker Drive Encryption, select Manage BitLocker.

Как отключить BitLocker в Windows 10

Если вам потребовалось отключить BitLocker для диска (HDD и SSD) или флешки в Windows 10 — сделать это очень просто, при условии, что вы можете получить доступ к нему, можете открыть содержимое — знаете пароль или имеете другой путь способ разблокировки.

Снятие шифрования BitLocker с диска или флешки

Сначала про отдельный момент, касающийся некоторых ноутбуков и ПК с предустановленной Windows 10. На них может быть по умолчанию включена функция «Шифрование устройства», которая отключается не так же, как включенное вами вручную шифрование BitLocker. Если системный диск был зашифрован при покупке, то для отключения шифрования выполните следующие шаги (не на любом компьютере с Windows 10 есть такие пункты):

  1. Зайдите в Параметры — Обновление и безопасность.
  2. В меню слева выберите «Шифрование устройства» и отключите шифрование устройства.
  3. Также пункт «Шифрование устройства» можно найти в Параметры — Система — О системе.

В случае, если требуется отключить BitLocker для диска или флешки, шаги будут следующими:

  1. В проводнике нажмите правой кнопкой мыши по зашифрованному и разблокированному диску, выберите пункт «Управление BitLocker». Также в параметры BitLocker можно попасть через Панель управления — Шифрование BitLocker.
  2. Найдите ваш диск в списке и нажмите «Отключить BitLocker» (требуются права администратора на компьютере).
  3. Подтвердите отключение BitLocker.

Учитывайте, что процесс расшифровки диска и снятия BitLocker может занять продолжительное время, вплоть до нескольких часов, особенно для медленных и заполненных HDD — не запускайте процесс на ноутбуке от батареи или на ПК, если его в ближайшее время потребуется выключить.
